Have you noticed how living in Thailand feels natural for many of us Filipinos?
Despite the cultural differences, it feels like we have always known how to blend in, adapt, and enjoy living the Thai way without making it a struggle.
One reason is our deep sense of adaptability. Growing up in a country where change is constant, whether in weather, work, or life circumstances, we have learned to adjust quickly. In Thailand, this translates into living like locals: eating street food with ease, greeting with a wai, hopping on a motorbike taxi, or even embracing the slower, more relaxed pace of life.
Another reason lies in our strong sense of community, something deeply rooted in the Filipino value of Kapwa which is the belief that we are all connected. Pakikipagkapwa-tao teaches us to see others not as strangers but as fellow human beings worthy of respect and understanding. This mindset makes it easier for us to relate to Thai people, who also value community, harmony, and respect.
Even with different religious beliefs, we find ways to live side by side peacefully. We attend church on Sunday, they go to the temple, yet we come together for meals, celebrations, and everyday life. We respect each other’s ways because both cultures hold kindness and hospitality in high regard.
And let’s not forget our courage to make mistakes without shame. Many Filipinos will try speaking Thai even if it sounds “barok.” We know we might mix up tones or words, but that does not stop us. We try, we laugh, we learn. It is not just about survival. We genuinely love learning something new because it connects us more with the people around us.
At the heart of it all, we thrive in Thailand because our Filipino values naturally align with Thai values. Respect, humility, hospitality, and the joy of sharing life with others are things we carry wherever we go.
